After 24 years at Capital One, Andrella is somewhat of a celebrity within our Financial Services division. She’s even been referred to as our own personal Oprah and for good reason. Her laugh is contagious, her eyes are bright, and her determination and grit have not only helped her overcome personal hardships, but also inspire our 5,000 Financial Services associates in an unprecedented year of challenges. She’s authentic, perfectly in tune with what our associates need, and helps them bring their whole selves to work each day. We are so grateful for the critical role she plays in making Capital One and our community a better and more equitable place.
Andrella is living proof that you can come out of anything, regardless of circumstance. She overcame her own challenges to get where she is today. Abused by her father as a child, she escaped to DFW on a Greyhound bus with her mom and four siblings with just the clothes on her back. Today, she uses her personal story to help others find their purpose and belonging through kindness, empathy, and leadership. She has been one of Capital One Financial Services’ biggest D&I champions and creates a culture of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
Andrella bravely leaned into an opportunity in 2020 to enable Capital One people leaders to feel equipped to have meaningful conversations following the public outrage over the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd. Communities of color also faced more risk with COVID-19, so Black associates needed an ally on multiple fronts. By using human-centered design principles, she developed key content and frameworks to begin leading meaningful discussions with her peers, associates, and Capital One leadership.
She launched “Real Talk” conversations with Dr. Moses Chism, a mental health professional specializing in trauma in the Black communities. These sessions have reached more than 1,500 executives and associates in less than two months. The talks have focused on authenticity, self-love, and overcoming trauma. One associate called them “game-changing in helping everyone open up while feeling fully supported, championed, and safe.” Her efforts in creating the space for pivotal dialogue have enabled, equipped, and empowered leaders and associates during this critical time.
